Fr. Roland Matoyi CMM was on Friday 27th September 2019 installed a Regional Superior of the Missionaries of Mariannhill in Papua New Guinea.
The presence of the Missionaries of Mariannhill dates back to the late 1950s, to the very foundations of the Diocese of Lae.
The history of the Diocese of Lae is undeniably a product of the mandate given to the Missionaries of Mariannhill by Pope John XXIII on June 18, 1959 to erect the Apostolic Vicariate of Lae. This decree was followed by another decree on November 15, 1966 that elevated the Vicariate to the Diocese and appointed +Henry van Lieshout CMM as the first Bishop. From as early as 1960 the priests and brothers of the Missionaries of Mariannhill have served the Diocese of Lae.
The first two Bishops were members of the Missionaries of Mariannhill. The third Bishop of Lae, His Lordship Rozario Menezes SMM happens to the first Bishop the different Religious Institute in Church, he belongs to the Society of the Montfort Missionaries.
Fr. Roland Matoyi CMM happens to be the first African Regional Superior of the Missionaries of Mariannhill in PNG. He succeeds Fr. Alfonso Voorn CMM, the last of the Dutch missionaries in Lae. Ahead of him is challenge of maintaining the presence of the Missionaries of Mariannhill in PNG, a presence that is not limited to provinding pastoral workers for the Diocese of Lae but also promoting the charism and localising the Congregation in the Country. Promotion of local vocations has reached a critical point due to several causes. In 2016 the chapter of the Missionaries of Mariannhill saw these and many tasks as a duty to be done in mutual solidarity with Diocese of Lae and the Mariannhill communities worldwide.
Catholic FM would like to wish Fr. Roland Matoyi CMM a fruitful future, God’s guidance and blessings in his new capacity as Regional Superior in PNG.
Yours Fr. Brian Nonde CMM
Secretary of CMM Region PNG
